What the heck! I burned my hands! IT WAS SO HOT!

The lighter fuel burnt my hands! I had to put them on the floor and sit on them to make them stop burning!

i believe that guy has that disease where he cant' feel anything.

Here's the fun part - make 2 rings of metal for your thumb and index finger - mount a piece of flint on one, rough up the other (steel) - now you can hold the ball in your hand, and set it alight by snapping your fingers - way cooler trick :)

Now someone try go try it and report back..

Does anybody try to do it?

Anonymous said...

I tried to do it, but im afraid i could not hold the ball for more then a second before it started to burn me. What did i do wrong?

Anonymous said...

Guys, use your brains. You are going to be holding a burning ball of fire. Of course it is going to be hot!

There is no reason why this would not burn you. Don't be foolish

Anonymous said...

DO NOT DO THIS!! I BURNED MY HANDS!! STAY AWAY FROM THESE!! :(

Anonymous said...

i think it might work, i remember spilling lighter fluid on my hands years ago and it set alight and didn't hurt in the slightest!!

maybe it depends on the fluid?

Tastes like... burning

The only reason that some people are burning themselves is because they are using too much lighter fuel. Spray on only enough to get the ball slightly filled, but make sure there isn't enough to drip out or run down your hand. So long as the fuel is contained and you don't touch the "top" of the ball and above, heat rises, so place your hand under it or pinch it from the lower sides.

Some of you guys are ridiculous.

DO NOT USE LIGHTER FLUID. USE LIGHTER FUEL.

There is a big difference. Lighter fuel, such as the Ronsonol brand shown here, is a Butane and will light in the manner shown here. Lighter Fluid is Aliphatic Petroleum Solvent, and WILL burn you.

The dark blue area at the bottom of the fireball has a low oxygen concentration so the heat will be low, and you will be able to hold it in your hand, it will just feel warm. The upper part of the fireball however is HOT and can burn you, so you must be careful.

Again, be careful doing this and remember to use a Butane based Lighter FUEL used to refill lighters, NOT Lighter FLUID which is used to light charcoal.

I was a fire-eater for many years. I performed in carnivals, and in my magic act and was the fire-eater in the background for the tv mini-series "The Thorn Birds."

I gave up fire-eating on the advice of my doctor, who said that it was very, very bad for the liver, and that the lighter fluid and kerosene placed in the mouth is immediately absorbed into the blood stream through the tissues of the mouth and nose and will eventually cause cirosis.

That is an important caveat. But in relation to this discussion, I have been burned many times, and every fire-eater I know has been burned, often seriously.

Anyone using these sorts of effects should have adequate liability insurance. There are stiff penalties in many cities and states for using pyro effects without a license, and above all, one must take adequate precautions. A bucket of sand, a fire-extinguisher, proper containers for everything, etc.

I think it is really dangerous for kids to be playing with this stuff in their rooms. Fire always wants to get big. It is like something voracious and alive and can jump barriers and find a way to become big very fast and in surprising and unsuspected ways.

Even high school and college students can be taken in by the seeming controllable nature of fire. They do not expect the odd and infrequent accident. They get too comfortable too fast. I know. I burned all the flesh off my palm once with flashpaper held against the handle of a fire-eating torch. I have had my face catch fire when some fluid dripped off my lips. Fumes that are invisible and unnoticed can explode very quickly into something uncontrollable.

I had a ten year old kid send me a video of him doing a magic trick in his bedroom with a small soup bowl of lighter fluid on a chair, and he would dip wads of cotton into it and then light and swallow them. I tried to explain the dangers. It was a house fire waiting to happen.

Even mature people, who have not experienced the unpredictability of fire, are easily taken in by the familiar.

They are much too comfortable until they finally have an experience of the surprising. Hopefully, they can grow from that experience--if they survive.

My boyfriend Chris and friend Nicholas tried this. Their conversation went a little something like this:

Nicholas: C'mon, pick it up!
Chris: Fine...OUCH!
Nicholas: You wuss, I'll do it...OWW!

...and this went on for about half an hour :D

Anonymous said...

I tried it exactly the same way as in the video (ronsonol etc). I burned my palms. The fuel does contain some high-boiling carbohydrates in the composition.

Smadaf said...

Quite a cool trick! :)

One specific safety issue is not addressed in this video.

CLOTH THAT HAS BEEN IN CONTACT WITH FLAMMABLE LIQUID CAN SPONTANEOUSLY COMBUST WHILE IN STORAGE. BE VERY CAREFUL ABOUT DISPOSING OF THESE THINGS AND/OR STORING THEM. The last thing you need is them catching fire while you're not even watching them, and setting their surroundings on fire.

AKEBONO, please, ADD A WARNING to your ORIGINAL POST.
We all care about each other and don't want anyone getting hurt.

Thanks!

I'm posting the same warning at Metacafe and other pages that I find mentioning the video.

Is it advisable to use paraffin instead of lighter fuel?

Anonymous said...

would citranela work? if not can u give me types of fuel that will work.

Haha just tried this and burned the shit out of my hands :P but its is all my fault. gonna try agins soon though .. Problems i had

1. Be near something full of water! if it goes wrong you will be glad you were.
2. Make a small ball, smaller the ball, smaller the flame .. easier to handel
3. COTTEN thread as well as cotton cloth, nylon melted an burned my hands.

Was ok for a first attempt though, got a little bit of holding first

and could anyone answer "is Zippo brand lighter fuel ok?"

Thanks x

Hey, like many others I tried this, but it worked fine for me, I can't figure out why people are having so much trouble with it. I guess the trick is in how much fuel you use, make sure that you're using 100% cotton, and don't keep the ball in one spot on your hand for more than 3 seconds or so... These fireballs did leave burn marks on my hands though, however they don't hurt, its merely discoloration of the skin, that being said, I wouldn't play with these too often.

i didn't try it because i cant find this lighter fuel. please tell me if anyone knows where to get lighter fuel??

Well folks, over the past 5 years I've been doing street magic (going around to people showing tricks). This has always been a hobby of mine (also helps me get girls). All my tricks are amazing but I want to do some devastating tricks that will freak the audience out that will make them think I had sold my soul to the devil or something like that. What are some tricks I should do? Please answer me out.

i tried it myself with common alcohol and it definetely work, but you just can hold it in the same place of your hand for too long.

I tried this once, but I didn't really want cut up a good shirt, so I went with a shirt made of thinner cotton. The ball was very small and started to be consumed right away.

Can u use gasoline instead of lighter fiel

Anonymous said...

lol, I can not believe it worked.

--Here are a few tips for everyone--
1. If you are too scared to start on giant flames, try rubbing alcohol first - it has lower flames and lower heat, but it's still cool. Germ-X will not work, though... it will only stick to your hands.
2. Make sure it's 100% cotton cloth AND thread. Otherwise, it will melt on you - it won't absorb the fuel either.
3. Do not use anything gas that's really volatile (eg. gasoline or camp fuel).
4. Use Ronsonol Lighter Fuel (from the video). I got mine from a tobacco shop, believe it or not- they didn't have it at Xtramart. Ronsonol burns longer and lights quickly.
5. Start low on fuel. If the flames aren't high enough for you daredevil, add more. With rubbing alcohol, however, you can douse it without getting hurt when it's on fire.
6. Keep it moving - don't hold it... roll it in your hands, don't leave it in your palm and don't hold anything above the ball... it's hot there.
7. Be safe - keep a bucket of water somewhere and DO IT OUTSIDE. Don't do it alone either. If you are scared, wet your hands first.
8. If it starts to get dark, add more fuel. The darkness means burnt, and the burnt means that the fire is feeding from the cloth and not the fuel.
And finally
9. You will get burned. It's inevitable. You need to have some sort of constitution to do this. Eventually you will get burned and it will hurt (if for a few seconds.)

I used 91% Rubbing alchohol.
This made the flame cooler and easier to handle. I can't quite hold it yet...but I'm getting there.

I made on before I saw this vid. I used a cotton ball wrapped in some string and put rubbing alcohol on it. I used 70% but ya it still lit up. It worked great I havent tried this method yet

Thtz So Fkin Kool

I have tryed this many times, a few times i have gotten burnt but thats because i experiment with different things.
I have found that if you dont have lighter fuel or rubbing alchohol then use somthing else such as deodorant, fly spray or nailpolish remover, the nailpolish remover works best as it has a cooler flame and lasts a bit longer.
But be warned that if you use deodorant then dont hold it in one place for more than about 2 secs as it starts to burn.

Alejandro said...

It works.
Is hot but nos o much you can hold it, very nice trick ;D

Anonymous said...

its works great with fingernail polish remover as well. i can hold it for quite a long time

Anonymous said...

Awesome! I just got it to work but if you use rubbing alcohol it doesnt burn as long. it doesnt hurt if you keep moving it around

Anonymous said...

I'm 12 and if you use rubbing acohol it won't hurt at all. I have been praticing this scence I was 8 now I can do it with lighter fuel and hold it in my hand for about 15 to 20 seconds. It is a cool trick
